Grace Matters- Sunday 7:30 pm WORD-FM 101.5
Grace Matters is the weekly 30-minute radio program of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The program is currently heard on 175 radio stations in the United States, and in several other countries. It is heard online around the world.
Lutheran Vespers, now called Grace Matters, first aired in 1947on a single station, WNAX, in Yankton, South Dakota. The program was founded by Rev. Harry Gregerson who served as the speaker until he retired in 1970. Pastor Gregerson dreamed of having a permanent home for the ministry, a chapel for Lutheran Vespers, and in 1969 the Stavkirke was dedicated.
Rev. Conrad Thompson was the speaker from 1970 to 1982. Following his retirement from the speaker’s position, Pastor Thompson and his wife, Swanee, spent two years traveling throughout the Midwest visiting listeners and raising funds for the ministry.
Pastor Thompson was succeeded by The Rev. Dr. Richard Jensen (1982 – 1993) who was called as the speaker and director for the program. Jensen added contemporary music, including the music for the benediction, which was composed in 1983 by John Ylvisaker. The benediction still closes every program.
The Rev. Larry Gedde served as speaker for Lutheran Vespers for a year following Jensen’s tenure. “I believe,” said Gedde, “ Lutheran Vespers is a treasure of our church because it is such a valuable means through which God’s grace can be widely shared.”
In 1994 Rev. Walter Wangerin Jr. began to reach the listeners of Lutheran Vespers with his personal story-telling style of presenting the Gospel. In doing so he continued the tradition of his predecessors connecting radio listeners with the Good News of a gracious Lord who loves and redeems.
Rev. Peter W. Marty became the sixth speaker for the program in 2005, and the name of the program was changed to Grace Matters. “I'd like to describe the new Grace Matters,” said Marty, “as a bit journalistic and a lot meditative. Each program is geared toward discovering how much grace matters in our lives. You’ll listen to conversations with people eager to see and know the grace of God active in their life and work.”
Today, nearly 60 years later, Grace Matters is broadcast weekly on 175 radio station, two cable televisions stations, and by Trans World Radio (TWR) to many parts of the world through transmitters in Central Africa and Guam. The program is aired in Australia, Denmark, New Zealand and Puerto Rico. You can also listen to Grace Matters on the Web.
With Heart and Voice Sunday 7:00am. West Virginia Public Radio…best frequencies 89.9 and 90.9 fm
This show is hard to pick up since the stations are out-of-state and not very powerful. If you are lucky enough to receive one of these frequencies, though, you will be treated to some of the best sacred choral and organ music the world has to offer. The host, Richard Gladwell, is British-born, but resides in Rochester , NY . He’s articulate, well-versed in the music, and has a neat British accent to boot! The website for more info is www.wxxi.org/whv/
Pipedreams Sunday 10:00 pm WQED-FM 89.3
This show explores the many voices and nuances of the pipe organ. Mostly sacred music, with an occasional secular tune or program to add variety, is featured being played on some of the world’s oldest, largest, and most famous pipe organs, by the world’s renowned organists. Their website is: www.pipedreams.org/
Sacred Classics Sunday 7:00 am to 10:00 am WQED-FM 89.3
This show is syndicated to WQED-FM from Minnesota Public Radio. It certainly is diverse, as the music selections run from sacred symphony to chant and choral works. Sometimes the host seems to get stuck on the symphonic/operatic themes a bit too much for my liking. I admit I prefer elegant choral singing with pipe organ in the background, but we must expand our horizons, mustn't we? To see a playlist, visit MPR's website and click 'Sacred classics' on the program page.

MAGNUM CHORUM- WONDERFUL MYSTERY and LIGHT EVERLASTING
This choral group, based in St. Paul, Minnesota, performs rich choral works in the acapella tradition. The choir tours regionally and has 4 releases on CD. The singers are alumni of the St. Olaf College choirs in Northfield, Minn. I came across this group while listening to an old choral music show on Public Radio called 'The First Art'. These 2 CDs contain wonderful interpretations of classic and newer sacred choral compositions. Information as well as music samples can be found at: www.magnumchorum.org/
CHOROVAYA AKADEMIA-ANCIENT ECHOES/THE WESTMINSTER CATHEDRAL CHOIR-FESTAL SACRED MUSIC OF BAVARIA...
ANCIENT ECHOES- is a sacred music form that originates in the Russian North. From the softest prayer to thunderous acclaimations of belief, this music, featuring only male voices, is bound to move the listener and inspire a state of spiritual bliss. The music on this CD draws from the Christmas and Easter services of the Russian Orthodox Church, some of which dates back 200 or more years. This particular choir tours extensively throughout Europe and Russia. You may hear samples and order the music through Amazon (www.amazon.com/)...
FESTAL SACRED MUSIC OF BAVARIA- This CD features music of the 16th century, with compositions by Orlando Lassus, Hans Hassler, and Christian Erbach. Of particular note is the complete setting of the Mass, "Missa Bell Amfitrit Altera' by Lassus, sung with a double choir and featuring organ as well as 'His Magesty's Sagbutts and Cornetts'. This music is intricate and difficult; I can't even imagine the training and rehearsal needed to put this work on a recording. Yet the choir and all involved pull it off, and it's a great listen. Information on the choir and recording can be found at: www.westminstercathedralchoir.org/ , and ths CD can be sampled and ordered at: www.amazon.com/
CHANTICLEER-A PORTRAIT and PAUL HILLIER/THEATER OF VOICES- CAROLS FROM THE OLD AND NEW WORLD...A PORTRAIT- is sort of a 'greatest hits' compilation by this San Francisco-based choral group. An all-male choir featuring soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone, their singing ranks up there with any mixed-choir group around! This CD paints a broad portrait of the many styles and genres of choral work they perform. They even offer 'Christmas Time Is Here' , the song from the Peanuts Christmas special. Available in stores or on the various internet music sites. Info availabe at www.chanticleer.org/...CAROLS FROM THE OLD AND NEW WORLD-I first heard a portion of this CD on a show called 'Millenium of Music' around 1998. The Theater of Voices, comprised of 15 mixed voices, hails from the University of California at Davis, and was created by Hillier in 1989. Hillier has won numerous awards for his work in early music and composition, as well as directing the Hilliard Ensemble. This CD features ancient as well as recent Christmas carols from the world over. Wonderful, special music; just don't expect to find 'Jingle Bells ' here. ROBERT SHAW FESTIVAL AND CHAMBER SINGERS- O MAGNUM MYSTERIUM and THE TALLIS SCHOLARS- THE TALLIS CHRISTMAS MASS...O MAGNUM MYSTERIUM- I found this one while surfing the pages of BMG Classic Music Club. A really diverse collection , from 16th century chant and plainsong to Lauridsens' 1994 elegant setting of the title track, also featured are some American hymns and a German work or two. Available at most Internet music sites (Amazon, BMG, etc.)...THE TALLIS CHRISTMAS MASS- Thomas Tallis lived from 1505 to 1585 and was known throughout Europe. He wrote much of his music in the style of Lassus, Tavener, Fayrfax, etc.; meaning lots of counterpoint/conflict in the voicing, and use of double choirs, featuring the unusual combinations of soprano/soprano; alto/alto; tenor; and bass/bass. This work is considered his masterpiece; it's a beautiful setting masterfully sung by the aptly-named Tallis Scholars Choir. Available through BMG or Amazon.com.
CONSTANCE DEMBY- FACES OF THE CHRIST and SANCTUM SANCTUORUM... FACES OF THE CHRIST- is really the soundtrack to the video of the same name that Ms. Demby composed in 2000. I guess you could call this music 'symphonic synthesizer work', or 'sacred spacemusic' , whatever the name, it's a great piece of music. Though divided into 4 parts, there's no pause between parts and that makes it even better. Great for meditation or just something in the background as you work...SANCTUM SANCTUORUM- This CD became very popular to sacred spacemusic fans after 9/11. Much of this material was used as background for the montages of video and photo that accompanied the television coverage of the terrorist attacks. Actually a companion piece, of sorts, to 'Faces', since Demby used the basic themes of that work and expanded on them through the use of sound libraries for voice. The initial release of this CD had Christian-based song titles, such as "Gloria', 'Pacem','Kyrie' etc. Interestingly, however, the subsequent re-releases had names like 'Gateway', 'Formless Presence', and the like. At this point Demby also started describing herself as a 'Healer' as well as a multi-instrumentalist, sculptor, painter, composer, and inventor. This music is beautiful, though, and I highly recommend it. Info available through www.constancedemby.com. CDs can be purchased through the website or Amazon.
LIBERA- FREE and JONN SERRIE- EPIPHANY: MEDITATIONS ON SACRED HYMNS...FREE- by the British boychoir Libera, is the third release by this group. Robert Prizeman is the composer/producer/director/principal musician behind Libera. The singing is unique in how high the boys' voices go. Much of the lyrical content is based on the Psalms, Lamentations, and other literature from the Bible. CD can be purchased at Amazon.com, and www.libera.org/...EPIPHANY- is the music of Jonn Serrie, a one-time church organist who's principal ambition was to be a commercial pilot! The music sorta got in the way of that, and luckily for his fans it did. More in the way of the 'sacred spacemusic' genre, this CD represents his interpretations of hymns such as ' O For A Thousand Tongues To Sing', 'Abide With Me', 'Amazing Grace', and 'Be Still, My Soul'. His talents on keyboards must be hereditary, since several of his ancestors were church organists also. Really good calming ambiences here.
